Pirate Flags

The pirate flag, or Jolly Roger as it was also known was meant to strike fear into the hearts any merchant that saw it.  It probably traces its origins to the plain black flag that a ship would fly to warn another to surrender at once, or else it would be replaced by the dread red flag, Jolie Rouge in French, implying no quarter given.  Many sport skulls and cross bones or skeletons, probably implying death if the victim did not surrender.   A fair number also seem to contain an hour glass, probably implying that time is running out for the victim to surrender peacefully.  Many of the symbols were probably borrowed from gravestones of the time.

Some of the flags are missing names, if you have a clue as to the name of the pirate that flew a particular flag, or have an additional flag for me, or any other discrepancy, please, let me know (and include your source, if you have one). MicroProse 1-6 are the product of one of the artists at MicroProse. Unknown1 is a French pirate circa 1717.
